Iyengar Yoga is the most widely practised style of Hatha Yoga in Western Countries. It is based on the teachings of BKS Iyengar who has studied Yoga in its classical form and developed a dynamic style with a focus on correct postural alignment and precision. 

Various props are used like bolsters, blocks and belts to support better poses and alignment thus allowing the practitioner to remain in the poses longer and gain the benefits.

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga in its simplest form can be explained as the union between body, mind and spirit for total well being.  Originating in India it dates back thousands of years.

Yoga is not attached to a religious belief or dogma and is practised by Eastern and Western Cultures alike.  There is nothing mysterious about Yoga at its simplest level.

By conducting a series of postures together with breath control, blood is oxygenated and muscles are stretched, leading to an improvement in posture and a general sense of well being.  At a deeper level it can enhance the mind and spirit.

Yoga calms the mind,
helps reduce stress,
improves and deepens concentration,
improves flexibility and mobility,
builds body strength,
supports hormone balance,
strengthens the immune system,
helps maintain healthy bloodpressure,
improves breathing and heart capacity.

As well as health benefits Yoga Meditation enhances clarity, optimism and inspiration.  On a deeper level, Yoga provides a means to cultivate inner peace, contentment and harmony.  If this sounds too good to be true just try a few classes!  Another aspect is that classes are non competitive, which is a welcome relief from other endeavors today.

Many of Yoga’s benefits can be enjoyed simply through regular attendance at classes and combined eventually through a home practice.  It can be practised by people of all ages and all shapes, sizes and abilities.  Postures can be modified to suit individual needs and support those with injuries or limitations.  Each of us can take it to whatever level we wish.
